Leopard found dead
A leopard was found dead at Lansdowne forest division of Pauri Garhwal district in the Uttarakhand, forest officials said. The incident took place on Friday night when the leopard died after being hit by an unknown vehicle near Tilwa-Dang bridge in the area, Divisional Forest Officer Narender Singh said. The post mortem report confirmed serious injuries on the hind leg of the one-year-old animal, he said. The leopard is an endangered species under the wildlife protection act, Singh added.

Five held
Five criminals were arrested for allegedly hatching a plan to abducting some engineers working for a hydel project in Uttarakhand's Chamoli district, police said here. Acting on a tip-off, the five were arrested from Joshimath area, they said, adding that four revolvers and 20 cartridges were recovered from their possession. During interrogation, the criminals confessed that had made a plan to kidnap some engineers of Patel engineering company and Rishikesh Ganga hydel project, police claimed.

Six killed in road accidents
Fix persons were killed and one seriously injured in two road accidents in Uttarakhand, police said. Four passengers were killed yesterday when a jeep skidded off the road and fell into a gorge at Kapkot area of Bageshwar district. The mishap took place when the driver lost control over the vehicle while taking a sharp turn, they said. All the passengers died on the spot, police said, adding that the bodies have been sent for postmortem. In the other mishap, two persons were killed and one seriously injured when a car rolled into a gorge at Phukot area of Tehri district last night. The injured has been referred to the state-run Doon hospital here in view of his serious condition, police added.

Teenage boy beaten to death
A teenage boy was beaten to death at Gularia village in Udhamsingh Nagar district here by the family of a girl with whose brother he had got into a fight, police said today. Firoz Aalam (15), a student of class X, was called by a girl to her house last night where he was badly beaten by the girl's father and brothers following which he died, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) of Kashipur Harish Verma said. Verma said the murder is not an honour killing as Aalam and the girl were not in a relationship.
Preliminary investigations have revealed that Aalam had a fight with the girl's brother Mukhtar over the boundary of their agricultural fields a few days ago and the family had used the girl to call Aalam to their house, he said. The FIR lodged by Aalam's father Mehboob Aalam named her father Samad, brothers Mukhtar and Alim and mother Sarvari as the accused, while the girl's name has not been mentioned, the DSP said.
Police has launched investigations in the case. However, no arrests have been made so far, Verma said. Police force has also been deployed in the village in view of the prevailing tension, he added.

Bomb scare in Shatabdi
On December 27 bomb disposal squads searched the Dehradun-bound Shatabdi Express following rumours that a bomb was planted in the train. The bomb disposal squads were pressed into service in the train which was stopped at Meerut, Muzaffarnagar and Roorkee stations for frisking as well as checking, the police said adding no explosive was, however, found. The bomb scare gave a tough time time to passengers of the train.
The Shatabdi, which had left Delhi at 7AM, reached Dehradun at 3PM, two and half hours behind schedule.

Foodgrain Scheme launched
A new scheme for people living below poverty line has been launched by the Uttarakhand government on the occasion of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee's birthday. Launching the 'Atal Foodgrain Scheme' Chief Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal said under the programme those belonging to the BPL category can avail wheat at Rs two per kg and rice at the rate of Rs three per kg. "Ambitious 'Atal Adarsh Gram Yogana' has already been implemented in selected 670 villages under which all basic facilities are being provided, and these villages are being developed as model villages," Pokhriyal added.
